Pre-reading Activity

A Single Shard is a book of historical fiction, that is the author uses history as a background for imagined events. Characters in a book like this may be fictional or historical or both. Have you read other works of historical fiction? If so, what do you enjoy about this type of book? What information does it give you that you would not be able to get by reading a history book?

Yes,I have read other works of historical fiction. One book I read was called Number the Stars.I sometimes like to read that kind of of book because even though it's not real,I can kinda imagine myself in the place of the characters. For example, the main character lived in the time when Hitler and the Nazis took control. So I could see a little how it was like.

In fact, I have. I remember when we read "Number the Stars." I like being able to place myself in that time period. If it's a story during a war, i like to think "how would I have reacted in that situation?"
You could learn about how people felt during that situation, and that you would not learn from a standard text book.

No, I have not read a book like this that I can remember. You can not learn about where and how the people acked. In a historical fiction book you can sort of hear what they are saying.

1.Yes I have read other books like this one it was called "Number the Stars" by Lowis Lowrey.
2.The thing I like about historical fiction books is that it has true facts in the book but you can add people and things that never realy happened.
3.The things a historical fiction book can give you that a history book can't give you is real life experiance and history books just gives you facts.Kids like a little fiction in the books they read.

I have recently read a historical book for Battle of the Books. It was called 'Strawberry Girl' by Lois Lenski. It was set in the 1800s in Florida. It was about a girl who planted strawberries. She had a strawberry farm. I learned it was hard to plant strawberries in the 1800s and that kids had to do a lot of work. They weren't allowed to sit around and be spoiled and not try.

I`ve read "Number the Stars" and I liked it because you could put yourself in the place of the characters. In history books it tells you exactly what happened but in a historical fiction books it tells you the author`s opinion about the plot.
