Our third graders are reading the book Poppy by AVI and completing a literature circle to share their insights about this wonderful story.

I think that Poppy thought the owl was real at first but then she asked the cat about if it was real since the cat looked old and tired. The cat said it was fake. Poppy was relieved that the owl was fake. She was happy that Mr. Ocax would not come because he thought the owl was real and not fake. He thought the fake owl was protecting his territory. I think that Mr. Ocax was angry that he could not go to try and eat Poppy and he was scared that she would use the quill to protect herself.

I think one thing that Poppy learned about the fake owl that is scaring Mr. Ocax is that Mr. Ocax actually is scared that the owl really was a real owl.So that proves that Mr. Ocax was pretty scared that something was going to happen to him. But at the same time when I saw what the fake owl looked liked, if I didn’t read that that owl was fake. I could definitely tell that it was fake because Mr. Ocax looks nothing like that. Plus one reason I could tell it was fake is because an owl couldn’t stand that straight for that long of time unless it was really hungry and was waiting for food. I still can’t believe Mr. Ocax didn’t tell that owl was fake!
It means a couple things for Poppy. It means that Mr. Ocax basically just let out a giant secret which the secret is that even Mr. Ocax is scared of something, and I’m pretty sure in Poppy’s mind she was laughing so hard. Poppy and I were both probably wondering why Mr. Ocax has hidden all his fear for so long and just now got scared over an owl! I think this will change Mr. Ocax because now there will be rumors spreading around that Mr. Ocax got scared. But I believe that over time that rumor will fade away. The last thing I want to say is if I were Mr. Ocax I would hide at this point. Mr. Ocax controls the mice because all the mice have to ask Mr. Ocax’s permission to go anywhere besides their house. He also controls the mice Poppy’s dad had to ask Mr. Ocax if their family could move into a new house. So that is just one of the ways Mr. Ocax controls the mice. but Mr. Ocax was lying when he said the porcupine would eat them because they are vegetarian!

I disagree with Gwyneth when she says that Poppy discovered a huge secret about Ocax. Ocax is worried about a fight with a huge owl. So? Is that anything besides the slightest bit of information? I don’t think that is a very good start. How badly did Poppy need to know someone’s hidden fear? Not very much. Was that all Poppy came for? No.Poppy came for proof that she and Ragweed were not the cause of Ocax’s refusal to let the mice move to new house. Mia
Poppy discovers something about the owl that is scaring Mr. Ocax, she finds out that the owl is a fake. This means that Poppy can tell her family that Mr. Ocax is scared of the owl and that Poppy and Ragweed are not the reason her family can’t go to Newhouse. I think this will change Mr. Ocax because one of the deer mice family members knows that Mr. Ocax is scared of something.
I agree with Mikaela when she says Poppy and Ragweed's fault they can't go to the new house. I also agree with her because she said Poppy and her family just found a huge secret about Mr. Ocax. Gwyneth
I disagree with Gwyneth because the owl could look diffrent from Mr. Ocax. The owl did look abit fake but it also looked realistic to me. It could have been real and you just didn't know it. Also owls are nocternul so they would sleep at daytime.
I disagree with Mia when she say's that Poppy didin't just find out a huge secret about Mr. Ocax when he got scared of the fake owl.
I dissagree with Gwyneth because not all owls look like Mr. Ocax. It could have been a difrent type of owl. The fake owl did look abit real to me. For all you know the owl could have been real and it just didn't look like it. Also owls are nocternul and sleep at daytime so it hunts at night.Naomi
I partly dissagree with Mia's comment about post because Mr. Ocax is not worried that the other owl will make a fight he's worried that he will get shown up and will not get treated like a "ruler" because all the mice will be more scared of the bigger owl.ME
