Tragedy strikes early when Mr. Ocax kills Ragweed. Were you shocked by Ragweed's murder? Did it frighten you? Why do you think Avi started hs story in this way? Is this an unusual event in the animal world?

When Mr. Ocax killed Ragweed I was shocked at how fast someone died. I think the author made someone in the beginning of the book die because it would make it more interesting for people who read the book. It makes it more interesting because it makes the people curious about the next part of the book. The people who read it will wonder if someone else dies or gets hurt. That is why I think the author made someone die so fast. Naomi
I can’t believe Ragweed got killed by Mr. Ocax! I was so surprised. I was shocked when he got killed Poppy and Ragweed minding their own business then Mr. Ocax ate him. Mr. Ocax ate Ragweed whole! It frightened me so much. It was also so tragic because they were just standing out in the meadow and then boom, Ragweed got eaten. Then he was gone. I think Avi said that Ragweed got killed in the beginning of the story because she wanted to make people think it’s interesting and not put the book down and keep reading it. I think this is unusual in the animal world because animals can’t wear earrings. Animals can’t talk its impossible. Also if an owl wants food it doesn’t wait it just goes. Also animals don’t have to ask permission to go somewhere. Also an owl can’t talk to himself he can’t even talk. Mice can’t talk to their family but mice probably have some way to communicate with their mice family and friends. Gwyneth
When Ragweed got killed by Mr. Ocax I was a little shocked but not too much, because Poppy was telling him that it was not safe to be out here without permission from Mr. Ocax. It was sort of scary, but I could see he had something coming for him. I think Avi started the story this way to make the reader want to keep reading to find out why the cover has Ragweed on it. It is a likely thing to happen in the animal world too. M.E.
I was not as scared or shocked as I was when I read Riding Freedom when a character dies because the story was not called Ragweed, it is called Poppy. I also have read the book in Battle of the Books. I don’t feel like Ragweed was helpless before death. I mean, he could have listened to Poppy and lived on. He chose to go his own way, and wouldn’t take any of Poppy’s useful advice.Mia
